Diversity in Metro Vancouver

It is well understood that Metro Vancouver is extremely diverse. From the varied nationality of its residents to the variety of amazing restaurants.
On the way to work the other day I took a different route and saw these two houses within the same block. I think they are a great visual example that portrays the diversity of the city (to note they were shot in a nice quite neighborhood in Burnaby).
I’m curious to know what is so valuable inside the ‘security gate’ house; or what happened in the owner’s life that has made them so protective?
